I often hear folks discussing a problem and I wonder ‘can WordPress solve this’? It happened again the other day. A sales person sells ad space to an advertiser. The designer builds the ad and sends the ad to the sales person via email. The advertiser reviews the ad and emails changes to the sales person, which forwards those changes to the designer. Then the designer has questions, yadda, yadda, yadda. It quickly turns into too many emails back-n-forth.

The solution we came up with is: the designer posts the ad to a new ‘Post’ in WordPress and enables comments for the post. Then sends the sales person the shortlink, which they forward to the advertiser. The advertiser can then simply go to the shortlink (URL) to leave comments for the designer. The designer simply replies to the advertisers comment when the ad is updated.

This reduces emails and allows the advertiser to communicate with the designer.

We’ve all seen these options when we’re configuring our email, on our smart phones, iPads, computers, etc. but what do they mean and which should you choose?

I think you should use POP3 (Post Office Protocol) on your primary computer and configure it to leave a copy of the message on the server for so many days, say 14, and use IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) on your smart phone, tablet, etc.

The primary difference between IMAP and POP3 is IMAP leaves a copy of the email on the server by default. In order for POP3 to leave a copy of the email on the server, you must tell your email client ( Mail, Thunderbird, Outlook, etc. ) to do so.

Let’s say you’re going to send me an email and you have your email client configured to use POP3. When that email leaves your computer, it travels around the world ( Yes, around the world. Even if we’re sitting in the same room. ) until it reaches the server of my ISP ( Comcast, Charter, etc. ). Your email is sitting on the ISP’s ( Internet Service Provider ) server waiting for me to go get it. Now I click the Get Mail button in my email client. When I do this, my email client downloads the email to my computer.

This assumes you are listed as the owner of your domain name and you have access to the account/profile at Network Solutions.

1. Log-in to your Network Solutions account.

2. Make sure the email address in your account is current and working because Network Solutions will send the authorization code to this email account.

3. Click the blue Manager Account button in the top, right corner.

4. Under “Find All Your Products Below”, click “My Domain Names”.

5. Scroll down to find “Details for yourdomainname.com”

6. Below that, for the domain name you want to unlock and transfer away, click on “Turn Off or Request Authorization Code”.

7. Click “Leave Domain Protection Off” and check “Request Authorization Code”.

8. Click the “Save” button.

Your domain name is now unlocked and ready to be transferred away from Network Solutions.

Next, check the email account that’s listed in your Network Solutions account/profile.

Log-in to your other domain name provider and request the domain name. This procedure will vary from provider to provider. If you are transferring your domain name to 1and1.com, for example, and you do not have an account there, you will search for your domain name, enter the authorization code, checkout, and sign-up for an account as you checkout. If you have an account at 1and1.com, log-in to your account, search for the domain name to transfer it. You will be prompted to enter the authorization code.

When a domain name is transferred from one domain name provider to another, an email asking for confirmation should be sent to the owner or administrator of the domain name. If this is you, keep an eye out for that email.

I’m in the process of upgrading a customers site – TheTeaTable.com. It will be involved, and time and energy intensive. There will probably be swearing and lots of alcohol. I may throw a monitor out the window in the process. Documenting the process will be the purpose of this blog post. Opinions vary with respect to S.E.O. ( Search Engine Optimization ) so what we’re going to do is implement a change and see how it affects the site with search engines in mind.

Step 1: add rel=”nofollow” into the sorting links in Miva Merchant.
This tells search engines to not follow these links. You do not want search engines to follow sorting links because they create duplicate content. For example, if you have a category or page on your site for Shoes and on that page you’re allow to sort by Price, Name, Arrival, etc. all in ascending or descending order, you end-up having multiple copies or versions of the Shoes page/category – one for Price ascending, one for Price descending, Name ascending, etc. Nay nay! I’ve also discovered that the tag cloud in WordPress also causes duplicate content. Install this WordPress plug-in and you’ll be fine. It adds the nofollow tag to tag cloud links.

Step 2: make sure the canonical tag is on every page. This is the Miva Merchant coding we’re using: <link href=”http://www.theteatable.com/category/&mvte:global:Category_Code;.html” rel=”canonical” />
This tells search engines that this is the real page, just in case there are any other potential duplicate pages.

As a result of the above changes, according to SEOmoz.org, errors have dropped by over 1000 and warnings have dropped by over 500!

How would you describe your product or service as an emotion or feeling, in as few words as possible?

If you're a restaurant owner or chef and you make chicken-fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, rolls, etc., then you're selling comfort food. You're selling comfort and relaxation. Comfort foods make us feel comfortable because they remind us of the good times with friends or family.

If you're a fitness expert, you're selling confidence and self esteem. Building strength and balance means you're confident you can walk without using the hand rail or make it up that flight of stairs or a long hike.

If you make and/or sell jewelry, you're selling fun.

So the next time you're working on your next advertising campaign (brochure, postcard, advertisement, email newsletter, etc.), keep this in mind and design a piece that says or conveys that feeling or emotion.

You convey a feeling or emotion by using colors, shapes, and pictures.

For example, Paula's Kit Club – she has fun jewelry and crafting kits and her website is fun and crazy!

The Phoenix Cyclery in Fort Collins, Colorado – when I designed their website, I used lines to indicate motion.

TheTeaTable.com uses natural colors of teas and the colors are subdued because tea is a relaxing beverage.

1. Title Tag
This is the format: phrase one – phrase two – phrase three – phrase four
The divider doesn’t really matter. Dash (-) or pipe (|) or whatever.

a. if there is a brand name that you carry, use it. For example, “Celestial Seasonings”. If this is a well known brand name, include it first in your Title tag. Brand names instill a sense of security for your customers.

b. Limit length to 65 characters (including spaces) or less

c. When you’re thinking about what keyword phrases to use, put yourself in your potential customer’s shoes. What keyword phrase(s) would they search for to find your site.

To get to the Title tag in Miva Merchant, click on Products or Categories on the left, then click on the Edit button for a product or category, then click on Titles at the top.
It’s under Browser Window Title.

The latest idea is to not repeat the same word or words in the same tag. For example, do not do this in your Title tag: “loose leaf tea – green loose leaf tea – black loose leaf tea”.
Do this instead: “loose leaf tea – green – black”.
My tests concluded that this technique did not work on a short-term basis.

2. Meta Description:
In Miva Merchant, this is found under Meta-Tags when you click on a product or category’s edit button.
The product meta description should be around 100/150 characters and it should contain keyword phrase(s) potential customers would use to find that product or category.

There should be some matches between a Title tag, the Meta Description tag, the Meta Keyword tag, and the regular product or category or page description.
In other words, the same keyword phrase(s) should be in all four places.

If the Title tag includes ‘Celestial Seasonings’, so should the Meta-Description, so should the regular product or page or category description.

The Meta Description looks like this: The Tea Company carries a wide variety of loose leaf tea including Celestial Seasonings tea.

3. Meta Keywords:
The Meta Keyword tag should include keywords and keyword phrases that pertain to the page it’s on.
Do not use single words. For example: tea, loose, bag.
The Meta Keyword tag looks like this: Celestial Seasonings tea, loose leaf tea, full leaf tea

When you go to a search engine, such as google.com and search for something, you are not really searching the web. You are searching their copy of the web. Google, and other search engines, make a copy of the internet and store it in their database.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is making the website as easy for search engines to index (store) and crawl as possible. For example, some search engines do not like (or can not crawl) characters in URLs such question marks (?) or ampersands (&). Some search engines do not like the same keyword phrase listed more than X times on a page. Some HTML or CSS tags are more important to search engines than others. Search engine optimization is very involved and if it’s not done right, your site could be penalized by the search engines with a lower ranking.
